July 5 - Report on abortion in Europe |
|
On 2 March 2010, the IFP (Institute for Family Policies) presented a report to the European Parliament entitled "Abortion in Europe and Spain". In 2008, 2.9 million abortions were carried out in Europe, i.e. one abortion every 11 seconds or 7,846 abortions per day.
According to Eduardo Hertfelder, chairman of the International Federation of the IFP, "abortion has become the main cause of death in Europe, with dramatically noticeable social and demographic effects". The report notes that Spain had the highest rise in abortions out of the 27-member EU over the past ten years with "two teenagers having an abortion every hour".
The IFP, which views abortion as violence on women, offers several proposals to "encourage the implementation of public policies which protect children's rights during the prenatal period and women's right to motherhood by removing the obstacles in their path". The proposals include calling "an Extraordinary Council meeting of Ministers responsible for family affairs to analyse the issue of birth rates and its consequences for the ageing population and falling demographics in Europe and Spain"; promoting an "agreement between EU members on implementing a direct and universal pregnancy subsidy of 1,125 euros"; a "specific aid programme for pregnant teenagers to cope with the particular problems of being pregnant at this vulnerable age"; the "creation of centres for assistance, treatment and advice for pregnant women which help all women, both married and single, to have their babies"; a 50% reduction in VAT on a series of basic newborn hygiene products.
